In an effort to discredit the campaign of Byran Williams, one High Springs city official is taking to the internet.

Vice Mayor Bob Barnas has started using his personal website in an attempt to trash the opponent of Pat Rush, the candidate Barnas is openly supporting to fill the seat of the retiring 77 year old Mayor Dean Davis.

Barnas, a real estate agent with Bosshardt Realty, calls Williams “The 4.937 Million Dollar Man,” in reference to the dollar number of the sewer system expansion Williams joined Commissioners Eric May, Larry Travis, and Sue Weller in supporting.  The project is part of an expansion to help foster future economic growth, an expansion opposed by outspoken anti-growth advocate Robyn Rush, the wife of Barnas’ preferred candidate.

Barnas went as far as to setup a page entitled “The Truth About Byran Williams,” where he claims Williams plans to “double sewer bills.”  There is no record of Williams making such a statement and Barnas offers no backing data to support it.

The site, which features neon yellow text set against a bright orange and green background, also takes jabs at fellow commissioners as well as host of media outlets.  Barnas has been an outspoken critic of The Alachua TodayThe Observer, and The Gainesville Sun, claiming on his website he plans to start his own newspaper, entitled The High Springs Reporter.

Barnas also condescendingly refers to fellow Commissioner Scott Jamison as “The Anti-Man,” with a statement following where Barnas calls for all commissioners to be subject to an IQ test.

While it is almost never wise to make a veiled threat, High Springs vice mayor Bob Barnas continues to do so weekly. How can anyone close in and supportive of this bunch remain silent in support of this direction High Springs is headed down.Let alone allign themselves with behavior that has no moral compass or honor.Even praying over it as if. Very sad for HS and what it will draw toward us.

    • Diane says:

And, while Bob Barnas May have at one time, long ago, worn a military uniform in honor, he now dishonors it and, the citizens he was elected to serve. He should retire it along with his horrific behaviors.

    • Sylvia Newcomb says:

      Hey Diane,
Please go under Kessler Audit for High Springs and read it. Also, just remember had Mr. May not initiated “running for a seat” instead of the two top vote getters being appointed, they now have to determine which seat which they are running; thereby really tying the voter’s hands. Instead of being able to choose 2/3 this time, you will actually be choosing one or the other. And, may I please be so blunt as to say, just because someone is supporting someone does not mean that the candidate is not qualified. I have voted for many people in the past and have been either really pleased with the job they did or sometimes not so much…at any route, I think we can all agree that it’s pretty much a gamble. As far as smearing….eh…I don’t know…I’ve heard a lot of junk on both sides of the road. Thanks for your time.

      • Diane says:

As far as junk, you have NEVER heard it from Bryan Williams But, you certainly have heard it from the wife of Pat Rush. Probally more closely than I care to associate with.No thanks for all you do.

Disclaimer: I’m not a resident of High Springs (I’m in Columbia County), but HS is the closest town and it’s where I do most of my shopping, banking, etc., unless I happen to be in Gville for a staff meeting–so I do care about what goes on in HS.

And since I work two jobs that deal with water issues, I can tell you that having a functional water treatment system is the best thing that communities like High Springs can do for our rivers, lakes, and springs–natural resources that are economic engines that bolster the local/rural economy.

Our area is the gateway to the largest number of freshwater springs IN THE WORLD. Dr. Bob Knight of the Howard T. Odum Florida Springs Institute has estimated that the Santa Fe River Springs alone contribute $20 million a year in direct revenue–and that doesn’t include springs in state parks ($300 million a year) and Poe, Ginnie, and Blue ($5-$10 million a year). Given our porous limestone topography, every bit of pollution that goes into the ground has a good chance of winding up in our water–even in our drinking water. Why anyone living in a place like this would not see the benefit of protecting one of our greatest economic resources–our NATURAL resources–by having a sewer system is complete mystery to me. Protecting our waters doesn’t just make good conservation sense, it makes good economic sense, too.

    • Diane says:

Dr. Knight spoke before the Commission and, if one goes back to that date and, reviews the taped comments made after by the Commission, especially Dean Davis, mayor, one can see just how inept High Springs leadership (used loosly) is. People are ignorant to just how severe the dangers are and, laying in wait. For me the importance of clean and, controlled discharge equals all other water issues but, for those who oppose (as God sctartches his headwondering why)it is now a criticle fire safety and, drinking water issue (just recently ignored) because, THAT infrastructure issue ignored alone, speaks to total collapse and, a city unable to care for it’s citizens in a minimal sustainable way. Who on the dias depends on functioning pipes and, city wells for drinking water?

  3. Jim Gamberton says:

Bob “Barabas” Barnas wants and IQ test of all candidates to run HS to prove their validity to be there. His very actions decry his ability to pass that test and what he has done along with his merry minions is criminal. We are at a point where enough is enough.

The passing of Dean Davis is a good start. Replace him with some one who can and will think and switch the voting to a block who cares for the City’s future and not their personal agenda.

  4. Sylvia Newcomb says:

    Eric,
I don’t know that you can call Robyn Rush “anti-growth”. After all, she owned Decades for a long time and has vested a lot of time and effort into our children.
    Thanks

    • Eric May says:

Robyn has proven ties to anti-growth people, such as attorney Joe Little, and has attacked the sewer system, which is vital to our growth.

  5. Bob Barnas says:

To Lucinda..I have personally met with Bob Knight, divers groups and more. I Supported his projects, those of Our Santa Fe river and more. A few years ago I brought out and funded a 6 month program of a “Local Store Card” which featured Ginnie Springs picture. I have said at meeting after meeting we are the “Gateway to the Springs and Rivers of North Central Florida”. Yet when I made the proposal to work the operations of Poe Springs into a joint venture with the City of High Springs. Everyone except Sylia on this Blog right now opposed it. Vocally and big time opposed it. So to Lucinda. You are 100% right. And the day will come when the right people are on the commission and they all get it.

All the other stuff is sour grapes.

No matter what happens with this election, the fighting by these bloggers will continue and that is the sad thing. I have two more year to work on the plan for eco tourism here and a real CRA that does not funnel funds to thier chosen few. And if this city does not get it. I have people who understand and this will happen. Join me in the coming year to help this happen.

    • Eric May says:

      Bob,

      Talk is cheap.

You are an advocate for a big government takeover of our natural parks, as evidenced by your failed Poe Springs boondoggle; yet whenever the Suwannee River Water Management District asked the city to opt into it’s water conservation program a few months back, you allowed the item to die, and did not implement the conservation plan.

Do you have an explanation, Vice Mayor?

  6. Diane says:

Ask who said to the Commission “the sewer was against his first amendment”.Now see who destroyed it.

  7. Freida says:

So he is upset that he was not allowed to speak at a city commission meeting?? Does this mean he knows what it feels like to be dissed by the commission?? If so, why does he not allow residents to speak freely? I know its not just him, but he could speak up for the residents, if he wanted to have their input. I guess he does not.

  8. Diane says:

The miscreant needs to go. Any citizen can involve themselves in any municipalities business but, is it what is best for the citizens of High Springs when a sitting Commissioner utilizes his time to mis focus away from our cities troubles to feed his revenge in another city? You can not carry your cross, again, with honor, while claiming to right a wrong or, show how right you may think you are while projecting a largely obvious wicked intent and, behavior. Not very Christian and, sad those who project it the most visible in our town encourage and, support this whole embarrassing brand being made on our city. The most destructive group ever to inhabit HS.

  9. Diane says:

And, lastly (for this post), I have not seen anywhere or, heard from anyone for Pat Rush, or him personally, distance himself from the really damaging and, bad behavior Bob Barnas has displayed constantly and, publically. And, knowing just how influential and, supportive and, vocal his wife Robyn Rush is for Bob Barnas and, the other duress loving Commissioners one can surely assume that more of the same is upon us if we do not send a clear message and, elect Brayn Williams. It’s is simply morally better for everyone to stand down Bob Barnas.
